Your Name:  Ralph Hurd

Describe Your Brick Wall:  Seeking a birth record for John HURD (b. 1802 Ontario County, New York; d. 12 Jul 1872 Dane County, Wisconsin).

What Do You Know:  John was the son of Elijah HURD Sr. (1767-1828) and Phebe MERCHANT Hurd (1768-1851).  He had at least nine siblings.  His year of birth is derived from 1850-1870 Federal census enumerations, plus the year is engraved on his cemetery headstone.  Assumed birth location is from the residence of the family as indicated in the 1810 Federal census enumeration for Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York.  John married Eliza Anne PRITCHARD sometime before 1832 (birth of first child), and they moved to Wisconsin sometime between 1850 (when they appear in the New York Federal census) and 1855 (when they appear in the Wisconsin state census).

Where You Have Searched:   Have searched online records at Ancestry.com, FamilySearch.org (person ID: KNBV-SRS) and FindAGrave.  The family is included in at least 26 trees on Ancestry, although none include a birth record as a source.

Hi Ralph!
In the absence of civil records, church records often contain information regarding parents.  These would iinclude baptismal, marriage and even death church records.  If you know your ancestors religious denomination, you should search for nearby churches, and attempt to locate any records they may have.
